The Dell small/medium business site is like an Easter Egg hunt in late August. You may find some eggs, but they won't be nice fresh units with very much RAM.

In addition to the Latitude 2120, I found 3 "Ubuntu Vostro" laptops. They are the V131, 1440, and 1540, they all have just 2Gbytes of RAM. The RAM might be expandable, but I couldn't do it through the ordering page that I found. (2Gbytes is pathetic for 2012, but not as pathetic as the 1Gb base (upgradable to 2Gb) for the Latitude 2120.)

I looked at a few high end servers on both the HP and Dell sites, and they supported Linux. The challenge is finding Linux as an option on a laptop. I could not find any HP laptops that shipped with Linux. Did anyone else have better luck? Did I miss any Dell laptops with Linux?

Depends where you look; there's a few hundred stores in mainland China, which sell only Ubuntu on Dell.

Without selling the announcement short.... all those articles you reference were generated by the October 2011 press release. Canonical is great with generating press releases...but the track record for sustaining partnerships is not great. So has anyone cycled back and looked 6 months later to see if those Dell storefronts are still selling Ubuntu pre-installed hardware? How's that initiative going? I haven't seen _anything_ with regard to uptake by consumers since the announcement in October. 6 months later.. are chinese consumers buying these?

There are a few laptops with Ubuntu on the Dell Small/Medium business site. The easiest way to find them is to select "Laptops," then find the "Operating System" selection in the left sidebar and select "FreeDOS and Linux."

However, I recently wound up buying a Dell laptop, and after thinking I'd settled on one of these, I browsed Dell's "Outlet" store (look under "Best Sellers" if you don't see it in the top nav. I found refurbished versions of the laptop I wanted with more RAM for a better price. All had Windows installed, but that's easy enough to remedy.

I don't know why they don't make it easier to buy additional RAM while purchasing a laptop.
