Because the fan is handled by the embedded controller, not the kernel. Overriding it is dangerous.

Point taken, of course; though, if this laptop is (or was until recently?) the thinkpad of these days, why doesn't it work out of the box? I'm assuming hackers still use thinkpads; perhaps that has changed?

The fan's behaving the way that the manufacturer programmed it to behave, so from their perspective it's already working out of the box.
