For us, Linux might be a strong and even emotional brand symbolizing a lot of free and open, but for many of the targeted potential new free software users it's not. It's a technical component, and with properly supported hardware this potential user wouldn't care much if her Walmart machine ran Debian GNU/Linux or Debian GNU/kFreeBSD.

Not only that, but for the majority of computer end users, mentioning Linux conjures up images of basement dwellers ranting about the evils of Microsoft and the intricacies of Android vs. GNU userspace. I'm not going to comment on whether this characterization is fair, but given that it exists, you can forgive the average end user for avoiding Linux at all costs.
