About -25 years or so. Doing this is entirely possible at present, and part of normal functionality for a lot of applications. For example, when I "close" xchat, it actually minimizes into tray, because that's typically what I want it to do.

The close button is there to close the window, not to close the application (although that could be logical result for many apps, of course).
