Only if Wayland manages to satisfy everyone, which is basically impossible (just from a performance point of view, getting the performance of the stripped down window managers with the functionality, even optional, of the fancy DE managers is going to be extremely hard, if not impossible)

No— the distros will just package this stuff, and eventually all distro users will simply be forced to use it, since the packaged software will stop working with classic X11 and the whole reason you were running a distro in the first place was to outsource the distro maintaining to someone else.
