libpng 1.2->1.5 transition in debian http://release.debian.org/transitions/html/libpng1.5.html
yes, 1.5 is in debian experimental pre-transition http://packages.debian.org/source/libpng
it so happens that the main change is that 1.5 drops support for an already-deprecated direct access to an internal structure, of which it has long provided a helper function. However, 1.0, 1.2, and 1.5 receive security updates (not as sure about 1.0 anymore)
