ClearOS. "ClearOS used to be named ClarkConnect. It was built on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and CentOS. The current stable release is 5.2, which tracks RHEL 5.2. There are no point releases after that, even though RHEL has had multiple point releases (5.3, 5.4 and so on) leading up to the 6.0 release. RHEL 6.2 was released in December 2011. ClearOS 6.2 beta 3 came out February 29. So what's up? A lot. The maintainers have given it a major overhaul, which will be revealed in all of its glory in the final 6.2 release, which is scheduled for "soon"."

I helped a buddy set up a ClearOS server on a lan for a small business. He had some rusty Linux skills, but didn't care for Linux any and would of preferred to use Windows Server, except that it was too expensive.
But using this it was fairly easy to setup his lan and manage the half dozen or so Windows systems easily as well as providing remote access from his home for various tasks.
Took 2-3 installs until we had it setup like he wanted, but all in all it worked out well, which is as much as could possibly be expected.
It's a good system for SOHO environment. Other distributions should take note and see the sort of things that are required to be useful for that sort of environment and be able to be managed by non-linux-admin, but fairly technical people.

It looks like a key feature is an "Active Directory Connector," presumably, something involving Samba3 and Winbind. So, just offhand, does anyone know how far are we from deploying Samba4 and forgetting about AD?

At least 2-3 years for real deployments by non-guru sysadmins (i.e. 'point-and-click' types).

I was under the impression that Samba4's headline improvement is being able to run an AD?

A similar project with a debian base is Zentyal (formerly called eBox).
