What a terrible waste of useful resources.

I wonder what Oracle and Google could of accomplished if their money and time was spent on a much more fruitful venture.

It seems like a competition between two species; lawyers and programmers over limited resources (read job opportunities). So it depends to which camp you consider this to be a fruitful venture.
