I'd also like to see more flexibility wrt which version of a particular software in used in a distro (be it through a separation of "core" and parallel installable "apps", or whatever), but to some extent that would also increase the QA burden. But other platforms manage to do it (e.g. Windows, OSX, IOS, Android), so why not Linux distros?
