Collabora and Fluendo Invest in GStreamer Open Source Multimedia Framework
Two of the leading corporations with significant investments in the GStreamer project are joining
forces to help promote the commercial adoption of GStreamer.
February 24, 2012 -- Collabora Ltd. and Fluendo S.A., two world leaders in open source multimedia,
will invest in promoting the GStreamer multimedia framework through the creation of a cross
platform software development kit (SDK), targeting desktop and server platforms like Linux, Windows
and Mac OS X, and very soon to include leading mobile platforms, such as Android.
For 2012, the objective of the partnership between Fluendo and Collabora is to ease GStreamer
adoption by providing a full-featured, well tested and high quality multimedia sub-system for
desktop, server and embedded systems.
ISV and software developers will be able to target the SDK as a unified platform with their product
offerings. This open platform will serve as a reliable tool to certify GStreamer products. In this
context, Fluendo plans to offer their high quality suite of commercial audio and video codecs for
the SDK and Collabora will offer their consulting services and high level IP conferencing and video
editing components. This will be a first step towards creating a rich ecosystem where other
companies will be welcome to join and provide even more options.
The GStreamer SDK will offer a completely new way to get started with GStreamer. Developers will be
able to depend on the tested and certified SDK, knowing that their application will work across all
supported operating systems and architectures, instead of dealing with the intricacies of
assembling, testing and building media engines across multiple platforms themselves.
Collabora and Fluendo aim to create a common space where GStreamer stakeholders can communicate the
advantages of the framework efficiently, while providing technical documentation supported by
GStreamer professionals. Bolstering the GStreamer multimedia framework will ensure that GStreamer
remains the world's premier open source multimedia framework.
Future plans to add various thriving mobile and embedded platforms will include a GStreamer SDK
supporting a myriad of use cases, such as set-top boxes, in vehicle entertainment, and mobile
devices, among others.
"At Collabora we've worked with developers across a wide range of operating systems and target
markets, and often the projects have required different portability and QA work depending on the
use cases. We're joining forces with Fluendo to make this a thing of the past and release a
GStreamer SDK that allows developers to start quickly and focus on their product development,
whatever the platform or application.”, said Collabora CTO and co-founder Rob McQueen. "I'm very
excited to see GStreamer available to an even wider audience and the applications that can be built
with it's power and flexibility."
“Since its foundation in 2004, Fluendo has strongly invested to improve and ease the adoption of
GStreamer. Today, the market has proven that Fluendo’s initial standpoint went on the right
direction, and the time has come for us to renew our commitment. In this context, we are very
excited to enter into a new investment phase, shared with Collabora. We are convinced that this
partnership will help GStreamer continue to be a success, both from a technical and a commercial
perspective" said Julien Moutte, Fluendo CTO and co-founder.
"In the GStreamer community we have always prided ourselves on making an effort to make GStreamer a
great choice for both commercial and open source developers alike and we are happy to see this
effort by GStreamer backers Collabora and Fluendo to help accelerate adoption further." said Wim
Taymans, GStreamer maintainer.
