Even as a regular LWN reader I have to ask, "What's a Mageia?". Apparently some sort of Mandrake/Mandriva resurrection attempt.

Well, a bit more than an attempt, I'd say.
They released version 1 last June, about 8 months after the initial announcement, and this is the fourth prerelease for version 2. The new distribution seems to have some dedicated members.
Many of the laid-off Mandriva developpers are Mageia founders, as well as quite a few of the parent's distribution most active community packagers.
They did get quite a lot of press last year, if only in contrast to Mandriva's woes, and replaced it in Distrowatch's list of most important distributions. This is no guarantee of quality, but Mageia did not just appear today.

Mageia was announced previously on LWN. As the other person said, it is like Mandriva, but then the older days. Very active community, seems the amount of packagers is growing pretty quickly.
They're pretty friendly towards new people wanting to help packaging. At any time, it seems like about 5 people are being trained (good be more, but only some packagers volunteer as mentors). Every new packager is guided by a mentor; someone who you can ask questions to + someone who offers suggestions. Then after a while (once considered good enough by your mentor) you get full packaging rights. I started helping out just because you get a mentor + availability of easy to follow packaging guides on https://wiki.mageia.org.
And why Mageia? No real reason other than that it is a friendly place and you can make up your own way to pronounce Mageia :P

It took rather some time looking around the Mageia web site to figure out what it is. Finally I spotted a reference to Mandriva. Some of us old-timers still remember Mandriva/Mandrake. I wonder how long it would have taken to figure it out otherwise. There's no hint that it's Linux, no hint that it's a distro, hardly any hint that it somehow involves software. Chevron's and Prado's PR departments should take note.

Strange that you found it so hard to decipher. The banner across the top of http://mageia.org says "mageia | A New Linux Distribution". The introductory sentence immediately below that states "Mageia is a fork of Mandriva Linux, supported by a not-for-profit organisation of recognized and elected contributors." Are you sure you were looking at the correct site?

I have installed it yesterday on a Thinkpad W510 without problem.
The default KDE install is cleaner and more responsive than the current Mandriva 2011 KDE default install on which this laptop is also running.
