Peru mulls Free Software, Gates gives $550k to Peru Prez (Register)

The Register looks into issues behind a recent donation of $550,000 to Peru in money, software, and consulting by Microsoft. "Peru, you see, has been threatening to outlaw Windows by mandating Free Software in government departments. And seriously folks, it is not widely known (or at least, not widely enough) that when major Microsoft contracts or customers are in peril, Bill is frequently deployed as the Ultimate Weapon."

$550k is _very_ small beer to Redmond. It may look a bit more from the perspective of a non-very-rich South American country; however, it's not enough to make even the President's entourage extremely rich men.

Hopefully the common sense we've seen coming from Peru will outweigh this obvious commercial bribe.

Microsoft is again playing the kid generously handing out cocaine at the party, and shoving small change into people's pockets.

It's getting tougher these days to keep one's friends. Will it work for another time?
