Might be worth checking your XKB settings with setxkbmap -print for the grab:break_actions option. If it isn't in there and you can still break grabs, please file a bug and assign it to me.

This returns nothing:
$ setxkbmap -print | grep grab

But I can still unlock the kde screensaver:
