However when asked "if people felt that having more women was a good goal or not" I would have to say no, that's not a good goal, or an appropriate one. It's no more a good goal or an appropriate goal than any other discriminatory goal that divides people up into groups and treats them as representatives of their group rather than as individuals.
Thanks for summoning up the courage to make this comment in spite of previous flack ;-) I'm a woman. And I totally agree with your quoted above comment. I don't like the divisive, artificially-engineered-social-group
idea intrinsic in '
women in open source' either.
if someone came along and proposed that 'having more males' or 'having more white people'
I think it is extremely unlikely that anyone would ever seriously make these suggestions because both males and white people are already in the
majority. And I'm not denying this distribution - but I think the 'cure' is worse than the 'disease' - the 'cure' just further institutionalizes the difference (in a very public way too).
Oh, and like you mentioned in the second paragraph of your comment, efforts to forcibly change 'group' numbers might also make things
worse.
And I really
hate censorship, which degrades adults (including women) to the capacity of children and makes the struggle for equality even harder.
