Within months of actual public release on devices it got more people using a OSS OS then entire decades worth of Linux on the desktop efforts.
This is misleading. The decades worth of Linux efforts you mention are the very reason Android has such a robust kernel to use. "Standing on the shoulders of giants", as it were.
