Here's a freely available (no registration necessary) version of the article via Reuters.
Don't know if there's any differences between this article and the NY Times one or not.

I consider it an annoying waste of time, imagine what the web would be like if websites in generally where as clueless as the NY-times appears to be...

I honestly fail to see how the Times' website is clueless... they're giving you a rather valuable service for free, and all you have to do is spend one minute giving them some information. I'm not saying you're one of these people, but I'm sick of hearing about places like Slashdot, where they whine EVERY TIME someone links to a NY Times article, instead of just making an account in 30 seconds and using it forever.

Only for values of "never" meaning: Never for this particular computer, with this particular browser while being logged in as this particular user.
They're clueless because of the reason I gave. What would the web be like if all websites did the same as they do ? (Does: "You should act so that the rule of your action can act as a guidance for others in the same situation" ring any bells with you ?)
Your argument also sounds VERY much like the "just click delete" argument to justify spam. People claim that clicking delete takes much less time and energy than figthing spam, and thus it's pointless to complain about it. This migth be true when you get 3 spams a day. How about when it inevitably grows to 30, then 300 ?
Thank you. I'd appreciate it if Lwn would refrain from linking to content that is not freely available. Atleast not without a warning of some sort. Here it is (no registration necessary)
It would have taken less time then it took you to write that note to register, click 'Remember Me', and never deal with it again. Here it is (no registration necessary)
