Rockbox's definition of stable seems a bit off to me - it tells me my 5th gen iPod is 'stable' but the battery drains in few minutes after the first boot. On charge even the alarm app freezes and reboots the iPod.

I know it is insanely hard to get it even barely working and more fun hacking than using - it's not like iPod hardware bits are documented or anything but it should be clarified somewhere that stable does not mean what you think it means!

Are you sure there's nothing wrong with your ipod? Rockbox has been stable on that model for years....
Or maybe you got the model wrong?

Either way, did you ask in irc/forum/mailinglist about your issues?

The stock firmware gives decent battery life and doesn't crash - I use it a fair amount. This is not the first time I've had the battery issue with Rockbox - earlier versions had exact same behavior but I ignored them given it wasn't stable at the time.

About the model - RockBox autodetects it as 5G iPod and to my knowledge that is right. I will check out the project mailing list to see if they can do something about it.

something is very wrong with your install/ipod then. my 5.5g video gets 20hrs, and I don't remember any other reports... pop into IRC sometime to sort it out (#rockbox on irc.freenode.net)

So, any opinions on the best currently purchasable, rockboxable mp3 player?

I contributed a whole minor patch for something once :-)

And I really like the software on my sansa. The limitations of the original firmware were shocking.

The one thing that is missing is a sleep timer on my version. I wonder if that's been added?

Sleep timer is part of Rockbox 3.10.
Even has a new "Activate sleep timer on boot" feature.
