Help wanted at LWN

Do you have an interest in helping to create the best free software technical information site on the net? Here at LWN.net, we have reached a point where we can hire another full-time editor if we can find the right person.

LWN is driven by a small, results-oriented group of people with a strong technical background; we also, obviously, care strongly about Linux and free software. We have been publishing since 1998, and plan to be around for a long time yet. To do that, we would like to bring somebody in who wants to help us expand our content, grow our reader base, and, in general, make LWN an even more useful and fun resource.

If you feel you can meet the following requirements, we would like to hear from you:

Must haves:

  • Top-notch English-language writing skills with a demonstrated history of writing for a highly technical audience.

  • Interest in (and use of) Linux and free software. Candidates must understand both the software and the community that creates it.

  • An ability to meet (sometimes tight) deadlines.

  • Some willingness to travel for conferences and other community events.

  • A "do what it takes" attitude suited to a startup-like environment where there is far too much work to do, along with a willingness to be a part of our long-term decision-making process.

Nice to haves:

  • Software development experience. Python experience is a definite plus; kernel development experience is a major plus.

  • Experience with web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc.).

  • Graphic design experience.

  • Business development, marketing, and/or sales ideas and experience.

LWN.net is based in Colorado, USA, but we are willing to consider applicants living anywhere in the world. For those in the US, compensation would include coverage under our health insurance plan. We also offer other benefits (e.g. paid vacation and holidays).

Please feel free to pass this along to anyone you know who might be qualified and interested. Applicants should send an email to 'editorjob@lwn.net' describing why they feel they are a good fit for the position. Résumé/CV is optional, but should most certainly be in a free format, preferably text.

Indeed great news. Does this mean lwn finally more or less works as a business?

Quoting 2002 ( http://lwn.net/Articles/5409/ ):

"...Various approaches to bringing in money have been tried... But we have not succeeded in raising even a fraction of the required funds... Other options (such as subscriptions) have been considered in depth, but there is little promise (and much aggravation) to be found in that direction...
The end result is that next week's LWN Weekly Edition (August 1) will be the last..."

The fact that we're still here nearly ten years after that bad day suggests that, at some level, something clearly "more or less works." We've made a lot of progress, and are hoping that, with some more help, that progress can be made to continue.

When I first read the title, I was so sure (and overjoyed) you were about to solicit for git pull requests on github to improve the site layout/functionality.

Not sure why.

heh, I also thought this had something to do with volunteering. Great to hear that there's room to grow.

Regarding your github idea: it would rock to see such an effort. The editors should continue their focus on high quality articles, but perhaps the audience can take care of a new stylesheet. I like the simplicity of the site, but the looks can definitely be improved.

Please NO ! I have difficulties keeping up with everything already. Raise your pension, invest in infrastructure, support good causes, pay for development, but please do not write more quality articles ! ;-)

Jajaja... I kind of agree with this. I'm a happy subscriber but I'm still struggling to keep up with the new content because of my time lacking schedule.

I'm really happy to see that LWN business is growing up nicely.

No way--new articles are in violation of our sacred traditions! Instead of putting up new information, LWN should just license the Unix Review archives.

The only job better respected than kernel hacker. Don, what are you up to nowadays?

How do you do it?

I have always wondered how so few could deliver such a volume of original high density quality articles. With long working hours I rely on LWN to stay informed and I am probably not alone.

Additionally active kernel code contribution suggests your clocks have a lot more than 24 hours in a day.

I am equally impressed that you can expand in times like this, well done.

@Jon, Jake, and Crew: Does this mean the editor you let go not so long ago isn't interested in his job back?

Glad to see the LWN busines is secured enough for you to hire another editor!

I look forward to reading yet more quality articles from LWN and its soon-to-be-extended staff! :-)

Keep up the good work, guys!
