I doubt it's only the license. It's also some form of pragmatism and leadership Linus has clearly shown over the years. One can argue about what could have worked, but that's mostly wishful thinking and ignoring many subtleties that can fail any project.
For all I know, if the license was the only factor of success, we would have a thriving Hurd kernel today, right ?
