"To photograph is to hold one's breath, when all faculties converge to
capture fleeting reality. It's at that precise moment that mastering an
image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy."
- Henri Cartier-Bresson

We are pleased to bring you the first set of developer images that
capture the current fleeting reality of our Precise Pangolin
(Ubuntu 12.04 Alpha 1) as it starts to emerge.

Pre-releases of Precise Pangolin are *not* encouraged for anyone
needing a stable system or anyone who is not comfortable running
into occasional, even frequent breakage. They are, however,
recommended for Ubuntu developers and those who want to help in
testing, reporting, and fixing bugs as we work towards getting
this LTS release ready.

Alpha 1 is the first in a series of milestone CD images that will be
released throughout the Precise development cycle. The Alpha images
are known to be reasonably free of showstopper CD build or installer
bugs, while representing a very recent snapshot of Precise. You can
download them here:

   http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/precise/alpha-1/
   (Ubuntu Desktop, Server, ARM)

Additional images are also available at:

   http://uec-images.ubuntu.com/releases/precise/alpha-1/
   (Ubuntu Server Cloud and EC2)
   http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/precise/alpha-1/
   (Xubuntu)
   http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/edubuntu/releases/precise/alpha-1/
   (Edubuntu)
   http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/precise/alpha-1/
   (Lubuntu)

Alpha 1 includes a number of software updates that are ready for wider
testing. This is quite an early set of images, so you should expect
some bugs. For a more detailed description of the changes in the Alpha
1 release and the known bugs (which can save you the effort of reporting
a duplicate bug, or help you find proven workarounds), please see:

If you're interested in following the changes as we further develop
Precise, we suggest that you subscribe initially to the
ubuntu-devel-announce list. This is a low-traffic list (a few posts a
week) carrying announcements of approved specifications, policy changes,
alpha releases, and other interesting events.

Go Ubuntu, Go! You are the best desktop distro and I hope you'll continue moving forward.

PS I use 12.04 on my secondary home computer and I found it very stable, other releases were unusable for me until release candidates.

That's good to hear. We've been putting a lot of effort into sorting out that very problem, and for this cycle we have a rotating team dedicated to keeping the development release in good shape.

From https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NattyNarwhal/ReleaseNotes (11.04):

Banshee 2.0 has replaced Rhythmbox is the standard music player, and has now been integrated into the sound menu.

From https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrecisePangolin/TechnicalOverview/Alpha1 (12.04):

The default music player has been switched to Rhythmbox.

Oh well :-)

Bad decisions. We all make them.

The key is what you do afterwards.

Banshee is a terribly unstable player. Rhythmbox is much more better in this case, but its interface begs for improvement. Did they get rid off tomboy and entire mono, too?

They didn't get rid of anything but IIRC, no Mono apps are there by default starting this release.

Actually, I have a lot of music (~80GB worth) and I found rythmbox very crashy. I have found banshee to be a lot more stable.

But I'm not really fussed either way; they're both good (although I hope the crashes in rythmbox get fixed for those who still use it).

I know this is flamebait, but I think the complaints about mono are some of the most fatuous arguments I've seen in recent times. At first when I realised banshee was a .NET/mono app I thought "OMG!". But I later realised that disliking it because the language/runtime is based originally on an MS product is silly. Either the app is good or it isn't.

On the other hand it you go from 10.04LTS to 12.04LTS there will be no change of default music player. I think that is more important for Ubuntu.
