Lefebvre: Linux Mint 12

Linux Mint developer Clement Lefebvre has some news about Linux Mint 12 "Lisa", which is currently available as a release candidate. "The feedback we got from the RC wasn't as straight forward as it usually is. As expected, the introduction of Gnome 3 is dividing the Mint community. We were delighted to see that MGSE [Mint GNOME Shell Extensions] was well received and that it helped people migrating to Gnome 3. MGSE received a lot of noticeable improvements since and the final release of Linux Mint 12 will come with a Gnome 3 experience that is significantly better than in the RC release."

I'm a Linux Mint user since version 5 (then, with KDE; but since version 7, with Gnome), and this is "deja-vu all over again"... and a horror, as well. Gnome... KDE... who cares? It's the Micro$oft attitude of "'Progress' for the sake of progress" -- who needs it? If it ain't broke, don't fix it! I predict that many will leave Linux Mint because of the move to Gnome 3 (and none of us blame Clem... across the board, it's a non-consensual move).

Absent any compelling reason, I'll stay with Linux Mint 11 and Gnome 2. YMMV.

On a non-airgapped computer, my mileage would definitely vary unless the Mint 11 + GNOME 2 combo has sufficiently long-duration security maintenance guarantees. Not, of course, that I'd move to GNOME 3 even if it didn't.

I installed the RC when it came out on my home desktop. At work I am still running mint 11.

I'm finding I'm starting to miss Gnome3-isms at work! It's a transition of course but I think in the not-too-distant future I'll be preferring Mint 12 and Gnome 3 over Gnome 2.

I completely understand people having resistance, just personally as I concentrate on doing work new things become second nature rather quickly.
