There have been a few problems with 4.2.1-10, mostly having to do with the brand new, more politically-correct method of configuration file management, but this is the first I've heard of whiptail problems.
However, the XFree86 packages don't use whiptail except via debconf, so what you may be seeing may actually be a whiptail or debconf bug.
Please file a report with the Debian Bug Tracking System with the exact output of the breakage you're seeing. Go ahead and file it against an XFree86 package if that's the most obvious culprit; I'll reassign it if need be.
I recommend the "reportbug" package and command of the same name for filing Debian bug reports. It takes care of a lot of the tedium for you, and automatically includes a lot of information that helps package maintainers understand what's going on with your system.
