Additionally I think Microsoft extended the support period a few times due to delays in getting a new Windows version out coupled with the high amount of usage. It is not like Windows XP was only sold in 2001.

This aside from just the number of revenue collected by Microsoft for Windows XP. It is way higher than Canonical.

All in all, I think 5 years on something you can download for free is pretty amazing.
