Berlios to shut down

The operators of the Berlios code repository have announced that it will be shutting down at the end of the year. "Unfortunately, as a research institute Fraunhofer FOKUS has only few opportunities to operate a repository like BerliOS. Such a project will only work with a follow-up financing, or with sponsors or partners taking over the repository. In the field of OSS this is a difficult undertaking. In a recent survey the community indicated some support in funds and manpower which we would like to thank you for. Unfortunately, the result is not enough to put the project on a sustainable financial basis. In addition the search for sponsors or partners was unsuccessful." Berlios has served the community well; it will be missed.

The Free Software Foundation is looking for nominations for its annual Free Software Awards. "Last year, Rob Savoye was recognized with the Award for the Advancement of Free Software for his contributions to compiler and testing tools, and his leadership of the GNU Gnash project, a fully-free replacement for Adobe Flash. Savoye joined a prestigious list of previous winners including John Gilmore, Wietse Venema, Harald Welte, Ted Ts'o, Andrew Tridgell, Theo de Raadt, Alan Cox, Larry Lessig, Guido van Rossum, Brian Paul, Miguel de Icaza and Larry Wall." Nominations are due by November 7.

FSF re-launches Free Software Directory

The Free Software Foundation (FSF) has announced the re-launch of its Free Software Directory. "The Directory lists over 6,500 programs that are free for any computer user to download, run, and share. It was first launched nearly a decade ago, but the new version brings a host of new features designed to make it a more useful and current resource for users, developers, advocates, and researchers."

GNOME outreach program for women accepting applications

Karen Sandler writes about the GNOME outreach program for women, which has just started accepting applications for the next round of internships. "I met many of the last round of participants in the program at the Desktop Summit and even listened to a few of them give presentations about their work. I was extremely impressed. Even better, some of these women stick around in our community after their internships are over, which is especially exciting. A couple of the women I talked to said that they believe that their careers have been kickstarted by the program and they're not sure if they would have gone down that path otherwise."

Red Hat acquires Gluster

Red Hat has announced the pending acquisition of Gluster, an open-source storage software company. "Gluster technology offers capabilities that make it well suited to Red Hat's cloud computing strategy. Red Hat is actively building cloud solutions, as demonstrated by its IaaS/CloudForms and PaaS/OpenShift announcements earlier this year. Gluster's ability to advance Red Hat's storage capabilities also offers a unique opportunity for Red Hat and its customers. We believe Gluster's technology enhances Red Hat's cloud-computing capabilities and also offers great value in standard physical and virtual computing environments." More information, with, perhaps, fewer buzzwords, can be found in Brian Stevens's weblog.
