Papering over a binary blob

It seems that "Papering over a binary blob" with a co-processor will hopefully create a sane and documented interface to talk to this kind of peripheral device, and long term another (more Linux friendly) device provider might develop another device of that kind, with that same upper interface, for cheaper than the current solution.
People will then switch to the free solution en-masse, screwing the initial provider of closed solution.
