Probably too late for many people to actually read this, but anyway: With some projects this situation could easily be limited. I've seen a few projects where users ask again and again about the same cryptic error messages, which could easily be improved to avoid these questions altogether. In general I believe that questions about specific error messages could (nearly) always be avoided by simply giving better messages. With enough thought this could even apply to questions about other usage related problems, although probably not about generic questions such as "why is there no feature foobar?"

In summary: I think FAQ pages should at least try to be avoided. Instead of answering FAQs, try to remove the questions themselves from being frequently asked.
