Novell posts loss, announces layoffs (News.com)

News.com covers Novell's third-quarter results. "[In] August, Novell acquired Ximian--a move designed to help its customers adopt Linux on the desktop. Although there was speculation Novell would nix its NetWare operating system in favor of Linux, Messman says that won't happen."

They could always turn that loss into a healthy profit for the next quarter by litigating against someone - IBM for example - for alleged misuse of code, and announce a licensing scheme to allow people to run code they wrote themselves.
But of course, no-one would launch such a litigation or license scheme just to boost thier balance sheet would they?

Hey, you should at least be grateful for freedom of speech. People living in China, North Korea, Iran, Syria, and a few other places can get thrown in jail, tortured, and/or killed for making pejorative comments about the government.

Where else in the world can you enjoy this freedom and at the same time drive 5 miles from home on a Sunday afternoon and shoot a handgun so big that it makes your forearm numb after 6 rounds? Is this a great country or what!

Damm I like that bit about the handgun! Do you live anywhere near McBride?

I know you're just joking, but... dealing with McBride's transgressions is a job for the US court system, not private gun owners. Here's to hoping they do the Right Thing.

I agree.

Besides, it would be wasting a bullet. You can't eat that thing.

Great, now all we have to do is restore our innocence-until-proven-guilty justice system, get back our right to make copies of anything we buy (if we don't distrobute those copies,) and (what would be *really* nice) recover our e-mail system so it's actually useful again.

Oh yeah---where else in the world would a blind guy be forced to live in a major city, or at least really near one, because everybody has to have a car to get around?

There are a lot of definitions for the word "freedom."

Sounds like you're suffering from "angry young man" syndrom, i.e., "everythings rotten and it's all someone else's fault." You ought to think about doing something about that before it progresses into "bitter old man" syndrome.

Life is short, so be happy man! :-)

Sounds like your boning up on deluded right wing propaganda and pop psych BS then spewing on the Internet as if it was actually your own idea. Please think for yourself. The failure to do so can really bite you there buddy.

"I'm the devil. Welcome to Hell!"

Mwooohhahahahahaaaaaaaaaaa........

Yeah...I almost went right-wing after I got my first job and I was in it for about a year and a half. Then, when the 3-year job ended in my company laying off pretty-much all of us in my department, and I discovered I couldn't get another job in that field because of my eyesight......

....then I got into IT. Well, that's been ok for about 25 years now, but not if I ever want to leave the city, and I suspect right now, not if I lost the one I have.

Last time I went out looking for a job, I was actually refused at one place because the guy had a blind niece, and she couldn't do anything (or so he thought...)

Well, the next job I wrote the FIRST EVER data-communications hub in a not-for-profit that used XMODEM to handle all the state- and local-level organizations (thanks, Ward....and the people who wrote PIBTERM....!)

Oh my god....I just realized...I wrote the hub part to run on XENIX.....better go hide somewhere Darl might come looking for my code.....

There's one consolation for sure...if we can find a small-medium town with a good, lasting job, I can WALK everywhere I need to go.....

...but it sure would be nice to have all that local Greyhound service back again.

Anyway...about the right-wing psycho-pop....I did swallow that one for abount a year and a half. A long time ago.

I'm not bitter. I just wish my country would have an infrastructure that was suitable for more than people with 2 good eyes, and the ability to handle a ton of metal speeding down a superhighway, that's all. If I didn't know there was never a love-fest between the auto and oil companies, I might be cynical, though..... ;)

...really, though, I gotta say....when the Internet came along, that became sort-of my automobile....

A couple of not quite relevant comments:

1. asheville, nc is an incredibly walkable town that is still relatively small and nearby a lot of open woods.

2. 'the internet is my automobile' would make a great tshirt or bumpersticker.

No, thats correct, you don't get locked up for speaking your mind.
However first you get branded a 'terrorist' or a 'communist'.
Then the government and their cronies launch into a public campaign to disgrace you and your reputation.

Well, i'm not from US, however as far as i know, this could even happen in the Us, and IS happening in the Us to all the arabian people SUSPECTED of terrorism.

As far as i know the FBI can "take you out" and place you in a cell of 1x2 meters, then you can no more speak to you child, wife, etc.
I'm from italy, here this happens to people judged as acting for the mafia or being part of it. Not for suspected people.

As far as it's still happening, many of the arrested people get released after 6-8 months, no one ask 'em nothing, and no accuse else then generic "you're an arab u'r a terrorist".

Someone in Us , Us newspaper tell he's an Us militar scientist, robbed antrax from Us army. Well antrax is considered a chimical/biological mass destruction weapon : (after asking why Us goverment made it, after asking why Us government lose it, after asking why Us goverment did not alert NATO that had just losed some kg of antrax) i ask this : why NO one was arrested for terrorist after 11 semptember 2001 for having used it on Us people?

'cause they're cristian as me? 'cause they're white man as me, so they could do it, and no one put 'em in a prison? or maybe 'cause they'r militars?

That's olny 'cause politician live on people fears, but aren't going to solve problems. However, sadly, isn't an Us only problem

No, it's "if at first you don't succeed, and you happen to have a friend with really deep pockets, abuse your freedom-of-speech rights to get public opinion on your side, muscle everyone else out of the way who has a different opinion, arrange to get a non-elected president who'll do whatever you want, and THEN sue.

Oh hell---regarding that freedom thing? I thought we had the freedom to get the president we voted for.

Novell posts loss, announces layoffs (News.com)

Pontificating about Novell suing someone to make up for lost profits might be a laugh and a half, but Novell's vice chairman Chris Stone is a true Linux advocate and Novell is in trouble right now. I was their full-time open source advocate, was considered a valuable employee, and despite this was laid off in an earlier reduction in force back in late June--another RIF following so closely on the heels of the June RIF means things are really tough over there.

If you have any influence over purchasing decisions in your company, it could only help Novell to prepare your managers to evaluate future Linux products from Novell. Linux products from Novell will have distinct advantages over other products--you can bet their Linux products will be deeply integrated with their directory service, which will offer administrators extreme manageability compared to the competition. I don't know specifics about other features (frankly I'd like to go back to work for them as a product manager for their Linux distro) but Novell has twenty years of experience developing enterprise-class products and it's very likely that they will bring this experience to bear on their desktop Linux distro. My expectation is that if they can survive long enough to get their Linux products to market, we will all be blown away by what they can do for the Linux community.

I for one would like Novell to make it because I believe they have something to add to the Linux community. They are hardly another SCO, waiting to sue someone to pump up the value of their company--I know this for sure because I worked for them for nine years. I think they should be cut some slack and be given some respect for what they are trying to accomplish, especially when things are so tough for them right now.

For the record, my comment was made entirely tongue in cheek, and as a snipe at a certain well known organisation (And I haven't received a penny from IBM).
I wish Novell luck in turning these results around in the correct manner - ie. through fair and honest trade with decent products and services and playing a responsible role in the Linux community.
