It's worth noting that the udev maintainer is also a kernel developer. So this is actually an instance of a kernel developer refusing to support a particular user-space interface that, he thinks, is poorly designed or hard to maintain into the future; the uncommon aspect is that he's doing it in his role as maintainer of a user-space project.
