You can change the color scheme any time you like; just go into the customization section of the "my account" screen.

Color changing is easy.

Sure enough, I changed the left column background to #ffffcc and I'm back to classic LWN color. Changing "Headline background" to #ffffff pretty much completes the look.That was easy.
