Why not just add hardware AES encryption to the whole flash storage of the device?

In fact, it's ridiculous that devices are shipping without full disk encryption.

full disk encryption that encrypts the media, but decrypts it when plugged into a computer (so that the filesystem on the device is accessable to the computer for things like software upgrades) is pretty worthless.

full disk encryption that allows the system to continue running (for things like fetching e-mail or updating a calendar periodically) is also pretty worthless.
