I thought the worst part of the problem was that in Android every program with SDCard access could steal the password. Isn't the case that in iOS each program writes to its own separate storage area? That at least protects it from trivial access from any other application.

No, I don't even have an sdcard in my android tablet. It certainly is not storing anything on the sdcard, yet I have passwords stored. The sdcard is mainly used for things like photos that applications expect you to want to share with other apps.
