Kernel release status

The 3.1 merge window is still open. See the summary below for what has been merged in the last week.

Stable releases: The 2.6.35.14 longterm kernel was released on August 1.

The 2.6.39.4 stable kernel was released on August 3: "Please note, this is the LAST release of the 2.6.39 kernel series. All users of 2.6.39 should be moving to 3.0 right now. This tree is now end-of-life, please plan accordingly."

The 3.0.1 stable kernel is currently in the review process. It can be expected to be released on or after August 5.

Given that the latest kernel has been deployed into Fedora 15 as "2.6.40", it sounds like a lot of people's userspace environments aren't going to cope with a kernel that calls itself "3.0".

Is there a list of the packages that are currently known to need upgrading, please?
