Out of curiosity, why is there this huge thread on GNOME 3, when the three quotes deal with IPv6 NAT, Linux kernel version shenanigans, and "git send-email" wrt to network patches? Where does GNOME 3 fit in?

I guess it was in the body of one of the emails that sourced one of the quotes?

Not an email, a Google+ thread. The one about OMG FORKING:
Linus Torvalds - While you are at it, could you also fork gnome, and support a gnome-2 environment? I want my sane interfaces back. I have yet to meet anybody who likes the unholy mess that is gnome-3.
(Citation doesn't imply endorsement, especially as I haven't tried GNOME 3 for myself yet.)

Link for the second quote.

(I was confused about this thread too.)
