MPEG LA: 12 companies own patents essential to Google's VP8 codec (ars technica)
Ars technica reports on "progress" in forming a WebM/VP8 patent pool. Twelve companies have submitted an unknown number of patents that MPEG LA (the MPEG licensing authority) has deemed essential to implementing Google's currently royalty-free video codec. "With so many companies submitting patents of their own to MPEG LA, formation of a patent pool becomes much more likely, and the chance that WebM will retain its royalty-free position shrinks accordingly. That isn't yet a foregone conclusion, however—though the companies have come forward and made initial submissions, they may decide that it's not worth forming a patent pool for some reason. Even if they do, the decision to enforce their patents against VP8 users is separate; MPEG LA doesn't enforce patents (it has sued companies, but for breach of contract, not patent infringement), and so it would be up to the individual members of the pool to take legal action against infringers."
Bob Young on Lulu and collaborative innovation (Opensource.com)
Opensource.com has an interview with Red Hat co-founder Bob Young (now founder and CEO of Lulu) in two parts (1, 2). In it, he discusses collaboration and how it is actually a natural part of our society; the same is true in many industries. From part 1: "The reason you can walk down the street and not be mugged is because we default to thinking if we were robbed, the police would put the robber in jail. But the reason we can walk down the street and not worry for our safety is not that there's a policeman on every corner--there isn't. It's because it's in my interest to enable you to walk down the street safely, and it's in your interest to make sure I can walk down the street safely. So if somebody tries to mug you, the real problem is the other people on the street. You have terrible stories where people stood around watching, but those are the exceptions."
