Microsoft/Novell agreement renewed
Microsoft has announced
that the controversial patent deal with Novell has been renewed for a few
more years. "This relationship will extend through Jan. 1, 2016,
with Microsoft committed to invest $100 million in new SUSE Linux
Enterprise certificates for customers receiving Linux support from
SUSE."

I tried to read the article, I really did. But couldn't understand any of it. I mean, the words made sense, but the sentences were all buzzy and had no meaning. Can someone translate into non-PR talk?

I'm guessing that it makes Hyper-V more attractive or something. Either that or it keeps people in a Microsoft environment when they threaten switching, every few years some big organization threatens to go all in on Linux in an attempt to get better pricing on their Microsoft licensing. Maybe SuSE is what Microsoft recommends if a customer wants some Unix features but SFU isn't going to cut it.

1. no news, deal remains the same.
2. MS will buy another 100 million dollar worth of SUSE licenses to re-sell to their customers 3. MS and SUSE will keep investing in interoperability like doc/docx document format support, network and VM stuff, management etc.

Why is the headline and summary talking about Novell, when the new agreement is between Microsoft and SUSE which (even citing the original article) is an independent business unit of The Attachmate Group Inc.?

Because it's not really a new agreement, but an extension of an existing one which was due to expire?
