Apache License 2.0 is GPL-compatible, so whatever good is there can just be integrated into LibreOffice.

Sure, but somebody still has to do it. It is not like TDF has a lot of resources. My guess is that the codebases will diverge if IBM grts its way, which doesn't have to be bad: http://blogs.gnome.org/bolsh/2011/07/15/openoffice-org-in...
