You can easily run FTP over SSL, so it's no worse than HTTPS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FTPS

FTP(S) is worse than HTTP(S) with regard to NAT gateways (which, I agree, should not exist in the first place ;-).

Well NAT is bad anyway, but FTP/FTPS doesn't help statefull firewalling neither...
