OSDL Response to SCO Lawsuit - No Reason to Pay

The Open Source Development Labratory (OSDL) has released a Q&A paper on the SCO lawsuit, designed to help IT managers understand the risks of ignoring SCO's demands for Linux license fees. Here's the press release announcing the paper, in which OSDL CEO Stuart Cohen states, "we see no evidence that end users are slowing down their Linux implementation plans because of SCO's actions.. OSDL's position on this issue: .. there is real doubt as to whether end users should purchase a license from SCO." The paper, written by technology law expert Lawrence Rosen, can be found here (PDF format) and in HTML here.

If you're using Linux in your organization, and your management is concerned about the lawsuit, this would be an excellent article to show your bosses.

For my part, there's no point in my showing anything about this to my bosses. I could never budge them from the beast's claws.

So far SCO hasn't shown anything that supports what they claim. Even if SCO did actually show me evidence that their code base was stolen and put into Linux, I absolutely will not pay up until the court decides that I must. However, I won't try to convince others do the same, becasue if someone is stupid enough to fall for this kind of crap, so be it.

Shouldn't SCO be based somewhere in Africa? Most of the outrageous
requests I get for funds come from Nigeria or one of the neighboring
countries I think SCO would be more comfortable doing business near
their compatriots. Where is the SEC and FTC while all this blatant
extortion is underway? Anyone that would send money to these scum
should probably be protected from themselves.

Seems like you're not the first to think of that: http://arstechnica.com/wankerdesk/03q2/nigerian-sco.html
