Simply awesome!

This think could help so many people to start with OSS tools... I know of a few people that teach Photoshop (really GIMP for Windows) that will jump like crazy when I show them this.

In fact, I believe this is a whole new UI paradigm, specially for complex applications. Being able to temporary hide the all stuff that's not directly related to the task at hand would be pure bliss.

No, it's not. It's the only sane way to keep complex applications usable, and has been done for ages in professional software, like PRO/Engineer.
