The open SIP firmware sounds impressive, but it's possible today to just use a smartphone with WiFi as a home phone, with a variety of SIP clients and using Android as a somewhat open OS. Smartphones also have a lot more RAM and CPU than SIP phones, and if you buy a second hand Android phone it will probably cost the same as a wired SIP phone ($150 plus).
