On Debian, powertop 1.11 work with 2.6.32 but segfault with 2.6.37,
for reason unrelated to this change:

so I think the compatibility issue is moot.

buffer overflow in reading an arbitrary file is irrelevant to stable ABI discussion. that crash most likely could be recreated with any linux version if you expand enough config options.
