Students announced for 2011 Google Summer of Code

Google has announced the students that have been accepted for this year's Summer of Code. "We have announced the 1,116 students that will be participating in this year's Google Summer of Code program. Students will now start the community bonding period where they will get to know their mentors and prepare for the program by reading documentation, hanging out in the IRC channel and familiarizing themselves with their new community before beginning their actual coding at the end of May."

I'm actually slightly surprised that no other massive companies have come forward and started summer-of-code-style schemes of their own. It's clearly a PR success for Google.

I would certainly say that at this point it is the single thing that most significantly warms the free software community to Google, a company whose actions often provoke mixed feelings at best.

I agree. The FLOSS projects will receive codes. The students will receive reputation, experience, and of course, money. Google receive good PR.
