I understand Google not wanting to set a precedent, but for half a cent I'd expect they'll just pay the damages.

Let's hope not for their sake. Can you imagine how many patent trolls will line up if it looks like Google is a soft, deep-pocketed target?

Those damages just relate to past infringement (from whenever it began until the trial date). They'd also have to work out a solution for going forward unless the infringing code can just be thrown out of Linux.
