In fact, given that project leader tends to be a thankless task, and that numerous previous project leaders have declined to run after a single term in office, Debian may be lucky that they were able to come up with as many candidates as they did!

I think that's the interesting part of this - was there just one candidate because the other potential DPLs all thought he was doing a good job, or because no-one else wanted to do it. And if it's the latter, is there a risk to Debian of not being able to find anyone prepared to be DPL in future?

I believe it's the former; Stefano seems to be one of the most energetic and effective leaders the project has had in some time.
