MeeGo sees interest from others after Nokia shift (Reuters)

Here's a brief Reuters item stating that some handset vendors are becoming more interested in MeeGo. "[Valtteri] Halla, who worked for years on Nokia's Linux software and swapped to Intel following Nokia's announcement, said Nokia's dominant role in the project had held back other phone makers from adopting the technology. This week LG Electronics joined a working group to develop a handset version of the software, joining companies like ZTE and China Mobile, Halla said."

Seems like Nokia burning their bridges and leave the MeeGo ship is one of the best things that has happened to it.

Me myself has found MeeGo a bit interesting. It feels way less perverse than Android.

Nokia hasn't left MeeGo and the article is wrong saying that. Its been relegated to "for future disruption", whatever that means in the end is anyones guess but its still being actively worked on.

They will release a device this fall and have to my knowledge never said its the last one.

Anyway, its good news that more manufacturers are joining.

It's been relegated to future disruption since they first made it. The 770 was a pilot. The 810 was a pilot. The 900 was a pilot. All were meant to be afficionado products and not mass-marketed. Meanwhile, other made platforms with similar capabilities that were marketed as their flagship products. What remains that is disruptive about Meego?

"afficionado" feature if I ever heard of one...Sure, I want it, but it's not gonna sell devices.

Especially when there are alternatives

Well, you can have root access on some new Android phones officially and a huge number unofficially. Sure beats one or two niche models. Sure, from the purity POV MeeGo is much better, but sales of hardware are not big enough to support the ecosystem so it's better to abandon it now: it'll die soon - better not become too attached...

It's also a real Linux userspace, which was a big attraction for me.

N900 may be a kind of "proto project" in a sense that it did not gain much advertisement money for really get to the mass market. But newertheless I believe it has sold pretty well for that, at least almost all of my Linux friends seems to have one...
Even the HW is now a little big, it feels actually pretty good combination of touchscreen, real keyboard and normal Linux apps. I for example enjoy from the fact that when logging of from computer and waiting bus I can irc with good old xchat on N900. (simple apps like email, browser, gps tracking to be able to record my jogging and skiing tracks to openstreetmap and xchat for irc just works)

If you are a little more adventurous and really want to write some code or graphs, you can instead take SD card (class 6 or faster recommended) and install there the daily build or DE build from upcoming N900 Meego 1.2 image. This provides a real open source alternative with real people working with it on every day. If you are interested read http://wiki.meego.com/ARM/N900 to get started and ask details from meego-arm freenode mailing list. See you there!
