QEMU is just a userspace process. It doesn't short cut any of the Linux protection mechanisms.
That's the nice thing about QEMU/KVM, it's not reinventing a new security architecture. It just leverages what Linux already does.

that's true until you start implementing special hooks to improve performance by punching through the abstraction layers.
