GnomeDekstop.org
looks at
gDesklets.
"gDesklets provides an advanced architecture for desktop applets - tiny displays sitting on your desktop in a symbiotic relationship of eye candy and usefulness.
Populate your desktop with status meters, icon bars, weather sensors, news tickers... whatever you can imagine!"

So the idea is that rather than having all your applets in one convenient place on the panel, they can be scattered all over?
How is a "tiny display sitting on your desktop" different than a window? I was writing X applications that displayed status in small windows on my desktop back in 1988. This is progress?
You and me both

Well, I guess in this case the "advanced architecture" must consist of using SHAPE and telling the window manager not to bother with decorations.
