Welcome to Fedora Weekly News Issue 270[1] for the week ending April 6, 2011. What follows are some
highlights from this issue.
In announcements this week, voting for the Fedora 16 release name is open through April 11, 2011!
Also notification of some serverbeach outages on April 12, and notification of the intention to
rebase poppler in the rawhide tree. With Fedora In the News this week, four articles from the trade
press and blogosphere on Fedora-related topics, including an in-depth interview with SELinux Red
Hat policy maintainer, Dan Walsh. In Ambassador news, a summary of traffic on the Ambassador and
FAmSCo mailing lists, as well as event reports from the Indiana Linux Festival. In Translation
news, more tasks and details related to Fedora's move to Transifex.net for translation activities,
and new members of the German, Hungarian and French localization teams, as well as establishment of
a new Latvian translation team. This week's issue wraps up with the latest security-related package
releases for Fedora 13, 14 and 15 this past week. Enjoy!

your favorite Fedora 16 release name. The details of the announcement are as follows.
"The time has come to vote for the release name for Fedora 16. The Fedora community has submitted
quite a few suggestions for the Fedora 16 release name, and that list has been narrowed down to the
final nine candidates. Now you can vote on these names and assist in the final selection for the
successor of Fedora 15 "Lovelock".
This vote begins 5 April 2011 and runs until 11 April 2011 at 23:59:59 UTC. Other important facts:
* We are using the Range Voting method([2])
* Ballots may be cast on the Fedora Elections System at[3]
* If this is the first time you've used the voting system, you might want to read the Fedora

Serverbeach (our service provider for our hosted and other servers) are upgrading switches in their
San Antonio (SAT) Datacenter. The outage for our systems are supposed to be 15 minutes but can be

"I plan to rebase poppler in rawhide to poppler-0.17.0. There are several API changes and 2 soname
bumps (libpoppler.so.13 to libpoppler.so.14 and libpoppler-glib.so.6 to libpoppler-glib.so.8). You
can test it against your package with this scratch-build: [2] I'll do chain-build of poppler and
packages requiring it next Friday (8th of April)."

Ambassadors for each event. The event page is laid out by quarter and by region. Please maintain
the layout, as it is crucial for budget planning. Events can be added to this page whether or not
they have an Ambassador owner. Events without an owner are not eligible for funding, but being
listed allows any Ambassador to take ownership of the event and make it eligible for funding. In
plain words, Fedora events are the exclusive and source of marketing, learning and meeting all the

"I've been using the GNOME 3 Shell more and I really like the changes they've made since the Fedora
15 Alpha release. These changes include larger icons in the Applications list and auto-managed
virtual desktops. Some people call this a "dumbing down" of the interface but I prefer to call it
streamlining. If you have a lot of previous GNOME 2.x experience you might perceive it to be
counter-intuitive... but give it a little while. The streamlining really makes the new environment
easy to learn and use. It is elegant, and as one blogger put it... "it looks expensive"."

top-level directory in the form of /run for runtime data.
This may sound trivial to many, but top-level directories tend to be a touchy topic in some
circles. Consider that there's an entire standard that was hashed out years ago, it's surprising to
see a top-level directory casually introduced.
But Poettering says that he already has buy-in from the other major distributions."

"Poettering says that the introduction of the new directory wasn't just his own idea but that it
has been discussed among the Debian, Fedora, Suse and Upstart developers; Colin Watson said that he
is happy to support the use of the new directory in Ubuntu. Poettering indicated that many
developers working in this area may have wanted something like /run for quite a while, but that
they may have feared the potential political consequences and discussions"

Two new categories have been created on Transifex.net: 'Fedora Upstream Projects'[1] - for modules
that do not restrict themselves to Fedora, and 'Websites'[2] - for all the Fedora Website modules.
The creation of the first category now allows language teams to use one single team for all each
projects. Earlier, it was necessary for language teams to be created for each of these projects[3]
