Good grief! Why do I buy an expensive NAS containing an ARM processor and 128 MB ram to control a hard disk which itself contains a perfectly functioning ARM with a gig of ram !!
My guess is that the disk drive uses all of its CPU and memory -- it's not normal to build more capacity into an embedded device than it can use. So to add NAS functions to it and end up with the same NAS capacity, you'd need to add the extra processor and 128M of memory, plus everything else which is now in the NAS unit.
