Please, retire the name "Project Harmony". There have been far too many.

Let's call this Project Lesstif instead.

I was just going to post something similar. I'm so confused these days which Project Harmony is which!

Also, doublespeak; "Harmony" most probably isn't.

You mean: harmonize the Harmonies?

Additionally, so far as I can tell, everything that's ever been called Harmony has been *remarkably* disharmonious. Now anything named "Harmony" now attracts my extreme suspicion, simply because of its name. :)

ha, and this one's no exception - "Harmony" tries to legitimize copyright assignments to commercial entities. Nothing benign about that. The only reason why anyone would start such a project (imho) is if they force copyright assignment and get criticized for it. Probably thinking that they'll get away with it if they pretend it's "all normal and for the good of us all". Surprise - that's *exactly* the case here.

So that would be? :
  • http://harmony.apache.org/ (Various Java implementations)
  • http://www.projectharmony.com/ (Project Harmony is a nonprofit agency whose mission is to respond to the abuse of children One Child at a time. )
  • http://www.harmony-project.org/ The Harmony Project is an award-winning research-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that targets at-risk youth in underserved areas of Los Angeles. We promote positive youth development through on-going year-round music lessons and ensemble participation.
  • http://harmonyproject.com/ (Sing Serve Share)
  • and now http://www.harmonyagreements.org/ (Ubuntu's attempt to find consensus on acceptable contributor agreements ?)
Wow.

The fact that Canonical played a role in Project Harmony does not make it an attempt by Canonical. The Software Freedom Law Center also was involved (actually, the initial drafts were done by them). Likewise FSF and FSFe are still involved.

Thanks for that information. Browsing the website, I only see, a "community-centered group .. launched ... by .. General Counsel for Canonical .. represent a diverse collection of perspectives, experiences, communities, projects, non-profit and for-profit entities."

However, nowwhere is to be seen *who* is involved in this besides this one name. I see Simon Phipps with one mail on the only mailing list archive that I could find. That would be information that would be good to add. :-)

The list of participants is considered private. Under the rules of participation up to this point I am not allowed to tell you who is on the mailinglist. Individual participants are free to announce their participation, but they are not allowed to rebroadcast any of the private discussion.

I cannot even quote any individual from the private discussions in an outside communication channel. And without the ability to quote individuals it is exceedingly hard to make the argument as to who is leading or even supporting this initiative. I caution you to not make assumptions that are not supported by the public record on the matter.

Until the final documents are made available and individuals and organizations have the ability to publicly comment on whether or not they support the final documents, do not assume that any particular organization is going to champion use of these documents.

The FSF did make a public statement on this new "Harmony":

http://www.fsf.org/blogs/licensing/project-harmony

> We will continue to attend Project Harmony meetings and encourage them to do the right thing. Please don't mistake that attendance for an endorsement.

Indeed that have. It's a good a read. What odds do you think Vegas would give the likelihood of an FSF endorsement on the final Harmony documents given the current state of the documents?

Somehow I feel that "community-centered group" and
"The list of participants is considered private" don't go well together.

At the very least people shouldn't be surprised to assume this is a Ubuntu CA legitimization attempt as that is the only person and company name mentioned.

But whatever. Peace and Harmony to all

Don't forget FSF's abandoned reimplementation of Qt:

And then there was ECMAScript's abandoned next release.
